SPEAKER BIOS & SESSION DESCRIPTION

Dr. Glen Donnarumma, DDS

Anesthesia-Related Case Studies: Reducing Risk and Improving Outcomes

Session Description:

In this course, OMSNIC closed claims will be examined to identify patient safety and risk management considerations in the administration of in-office anesthesia to help OMS reduce adverse events and strengthen clinical decision-making.

This course is sponsored by OMS National Insurance Company, RRG (OMSNIC).  OMSNIC is the leading medical professional liability insurance provider for oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States. OMSNIC is owned by OMS and exclusively insures OMS.  OMSNIC is exclusively endorsed by AAOMS.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess patient candidacy for in-office anesthesia through evaluation of age, ASA physical status classification, airway assessment, and relevant medical, dental, and pharmacologic histories.
  • Describe essential elements of emergency preparedness for the OMS practice, including team training, protocol development, and response planning for anesthesia-related complications.
  • Implement patient safety and risk management strategies related to anesthesia delivery, including appropriate equipment utilization, monitoring, and comprehensive documentation of the perioperative patient experience.

Speaker Bio:

When Rare Becomes Real: Catastrophic Events, Airway Readiness, and Case Selection in OMFS Practice

Session Description:

Catastrophic events are rare—but can happen to anyone. This Ontario-specific M&M session explores the true likelihood of critical incidents, evidence on airway skill atrophy, and why meticulous medical history review is central to case selection. Practical, data-driven, and candid, this talk challenges assumptions about preparedness and highlights strategies to improve safety when seconds matter.

Dr. Alia El-Mowafy
