Course Title:

Moving the needle on dental antibiotic overuse – a sustainable Canadian antimicrobial stewardship approach

Course Description:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was declared a global crisis by the World Health Organization in 2019 and is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. Most human antibiotic consumption originates in outpatient care, including prescriptions by dentists, who are the second most active prescribing profession. Up to 80% of dental prescriptions are for conditions where antibiotics provide little benefit and can increase the risk of harm to patients and the population.  This presentation will discuss AMR and  antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), focusing on a Canadian dental AMS strategies. Attendees will learn about key recommendations, communication approaches for patient expectations and practical tools to integrate stewardship principles into daily practice.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Sutherland is a graduate of the UofT Faculty of Dentistry and holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University. She is an Associate Professor in the UofT Faculty of Dentistry and is Honorary Staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. A founding member of the Canadian Association of Hospital Dentists, Dr. Sutherland is recognized internationally for her leadership in antimicrobial stewardship in dentistry. She has led national and global initiatives promoting judicious antibiotic use in dental practice, including the development of the Taking the Bite Out of Tooth Pain toolkit in collaboration with Choosing Wisely Canada.
